What Makes a Great Homework Space?

Children thrive on routine, and part of what makes a solid routine is a designated space for each activity. Your child can benefit from coming home from school and going to the same place to do homework and study each afternoon. It’s even better if this space has everything they need to succeed without the distractions of daily life. These are all the elements that create the perfect homework space:

Plenty of Privacy

There’s no worse feeling when you’re trying to focus than thinking someone else is watching you. Your child’s homework space should be tucked away so that no one will interrupt them while they’re working. A desk set up in the bedroom is often ideal, though a tucked away spot in a guest bedroom or living room could work, as well.

Ample Lighting

Chances are, your child will be doing most of their studying when it’s light outside. Make sure their homework space has natural light coming in. A space near a window will allow your child to reap the benefits of natural light while studying and doing homework. In case of later homework sessions, make sure there’s plenty of light for after the sun goes down. Trying to read, write or use the computer in dimly lit spaces can put strain on the eyes and wear your child out faster.

Limited Distractions

One important aspect of an ideal study space is a lack of distractions. Television sets and other distractions should be out of view. This space should be in a less active part of the house where people and pets are unlikely to walk by. Your child’s phone, as well as any other devices not directly connected to homework or studying, should be put away while they’re in this area.

Cleanliness and Organization

If your child’s homework and study space is a mess, that can make the space less desirable. The space should stay organized and have all the items needed to allow your child to work on homework without needing to walk away from the designated area. Encourage your child to keep the area tidy. This will help your child take ownership and enjoy the space more.

Personalization

Allow your child to make their study space their own. They can decorate it with their own drawings, posters of their favorite characters, or even collectible items. While a homework and study area has a specific purpose, your child should still feel like the space is a place they want to be. After all, they will be spending time there nearly every day after school.
