Teaching Your Child About the Power of Kindness

Kindness is one of the best forces we have for good in today’s world. However, we aren’t born with that knowledge. Children may not innately understand how powerful kindness can be. That’s where adults come in. While you’re teaching your child about kindness, you might just learn a thing or two from them, as well. Here’s how you can show your child the power of kindness:

Defining Kindness

Start with the first step: defining kindness. Let your child know what kindness means and how it’s more than just “being nice.” Tell your child about it, and answer any questions they have. The sooner they learn this lesson, the better off they’ll be as they go through life.

Leading by Example

Whether they admit it or not, your child looks up to you. Modeling kindness shows your child what kindness looks like and how they can be kind to others. Treat your child and others around you with kindness and respect, and give your child opportunities to do the same. It’s important to allow them to see real-world examples, but it’s equally important to practice what you preach.

Practicing Kindness at Home

The best place for children to start practicing kindness is at home, among family members. It’s always easier to practice new habits with familiar people. When they struggle, they’ll have plenty of chances to try again. Teaching your child to express gratitude and appreciation to family members will make it more natural to do so with other people in their lives.

Kindness Outside the Home

Everyone deserves respect, and that often starts with kindness. Talk to your child about the value of being kind to friends and peers. In most cases, kindness will be returned, but even when it isn’t, it never hurts to be kind. When your child acts in a kind manner around you, compliment them, and let them know what they did matters.

The Power of Kindness in Society

To teach your child about the power of kindness, start by asking them how they feel when someone is kind to them. It’s important for them to understand that kindness can brighten someone’s day and help them build stronger relationships with others. Advocating for kindness when it’s hard is another way to get your child on board. Encourage them to be kind and promote kindness, and they’ll start to see the power of kindness themselves.
