5 Fun Ways to Foster Your Child’s Creativity

Your child may have so many questions and ideas each day that you can barely keep track. On the other hand, they might be strictly set on thinking inside the box. No matter where your child lands on the creativity spectrum, you can help them develop their creative side. Keeping children’s minds active is integral to their development. Here’s how you can foster your child’s creativity.

Make Sure They Have Free Time

Children require unstructured play time to keep their minds active and engaged. Give them time and space to explore where they’re not on a schedule. While school and extracurricular activities help them learn and interact with others, time spent alone is just as important.

Show Examples of Creative Projects

Help your child get inspired to be creative. Take a trip to the local art museum for a day, and talk to them about different works of art that they’re interested in. Show your child projects that others have worked on to help them find inspiration for their own. Go to the science museum together, and discuss how STEM projects can involve  just as much creativity as art.

Encourage Reading for Pleasure

If your child isn’t already a reader, help them find age-appropriate books that will activate their minds. Reading physical books can help encourage children to think, which aids in creativity. It will also give them time away from screens, which will make them less likely to get distracted and will give their eyes a break.

Provide Tools for Creative Expression

Create a designated area of your home for your child’s colored pencils, markers, paints and crafting supplies. Make sure the area stays stocked up with your child’s favorite items. Find out what your child loves to do, and provide the tools and resources they need to do it. This is the best way to keep them engaged and help them get creative.

Foster Out-of-the-Box Thinking

If your child disagrees with you, validate their opinion and explain where you’re coming from. This can help them understand your perspective and form their own. Rather than telling them how to solve a problem, ask how they would do it. When they walk you through the solution, see if they can find another way to reach the same conclusion. Thinking outside the box can help your child be more creative and think more critically.
