5 Tips for Summer Water Safety

Summer is in full swing, and the weather is warm enough for fun pool activities. However, when children go swimming at a young age, parents should know about the potential risks. Here are five important safety tips and precautions for parents and their children to know about when going swimming or spending time around the water.

Supervise your children

No matter where you go or what you do, it is always important to supervise your children. This is especially important when children go swimming in a public or private pool or at the beach. Lifeguards need to be present at public pools so they can supervise everyone in case something happens. However, this does not mean that the parents should not watch their children. Always keep an eye out, even if there is a lifeguard on duty.

Swimming equipment

It is not a bad idea to have swimming equipment ready for your kids, especially if they are starting to learn how to swim. Having swimming equipment like floaties, goggles and life jackets helps kids improve their swimming techniques and strength. Also, it reassures them because they will help them stay on the surface until they get the hang of swimming and staying afloat. However, you have to determine which swimming gear you need ahead of time to ensure that you have the right type for your children.

Swimming lessons

If your child is a beginner in swimming, encourage them to take a few basic lessons. These lessons will help them be able to swim independently, be able to float and have fun swimming around and playing pool games. Moreover, while they take lessons, they will learn safety tips that will keep them safe while in the water and show them what to do as they get older.

Pool barriers

Having barriers around the pool will help keep your child away from the pool. Sometimes kids may leave your sight, and having barriers will keep them safe if they are ever unsupervised, even if it’s for a few seconds. You can install barriers, alarms and sensors so that you will know that someone is by the pool and can act fast.

Be prepared

It is important to always be prepared in case an emergency occurs. If this happens, be ready to call 911. Be prepared to do CPR whether you are the parent or not. Having skills in CPR will make a huge difference until help arrives. When you call 911, they can help talk you through what to do and how to do it.
